Understanding EFTPOS machines
Whether you are setting up a new business or are an established business looking to get started with EFTPOS, here are a few useful resources to help you navigate the complexity of EFTPOS machines and providers:
EFTPOS Machine FAQ's
EFTPOS, short for “Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale,” simplifies payments. It allows customers to electronically pay for goods and services, transferring funds directly from their bank accounts to the merchant’s account. Payments can be made via EFTPOS cards, debit/credit cards and digital wallets on smartphones or smartwatches. EFTPOS offers the benefits of speed, convenience and enhanced security during payments for both customers and businesses. It makes payment acceptance easy for businesses, eliminating the need for physical cash or checks.
Payments can be made on EFTPOS terminals with EFTPOS cards, debit or credit cards and electronic devices with a mobile wallet such as, smartphones or smartwatches. There are different ways to process payments, and knowing the differences is important. EFTPOS and debit card payments are processed by inserting or swiping and incur a fixed monthly network fee for the merchant. However, contactless (hover/tap), mobile and credit card payments have additional merchant service fees (MSF) as a percentage of the total transaction cost.
Consider a few basic factors while looking for EFTPOS for your business to ensure that you choose a customisable machine that aligns with your business needs.
- Consider usage locations and connectivity options (GPRS/3G/4G, Wi-Fi or LAN).
- Think about the payment methods you want to accept and the costs associated.
- Consider if you want additional EFTPOS features like POS integrations, surcharging and more.
- Opt for a user-friendly, versatile EFTPOS terminal that simplifies transactions, is easy to troubleshoot and allows remote feature activation.
EFTPOS is a cost-effective method for businesses to accept payments with 3 main costs, including:
- Leasing the machine – often paid monthly to the EFTPOS provider.
- Connecting to the payment network – paid monthly to the payment network (Worldline).
- Merchant Service Fees – paid directly to the bank depending on the package negotiated.
Smartpay EFTPOS terminals require a working internet connection to the payment network to process payment transactions. Having a stable internet connection is important to avoid communication errors and time-outs on transactions. The terminal connects to the internet using either a Wired (LAN), Wireless (Wi-FI) or GPRS (SIM card) connection. It is important to ensure the connection is reliable and backup comms methods are available (such as a mobile hotspot).
